Level 0 - Devlog #1

Hello everyone! We're excited to bring you the first devlog.

We have worked very hard the last couple days and we have made significant progress.

First we started to get our idea for the Level 0 appearance.

This is how our first ever design looked like. We've been going for an entirely different art style which is not similar to the backrooms at all. We quickly realised this and decided this is not the right path.

This was our next version. We have made our own wall texture based on the original creepy-pasta image. This texture went through many changes. You can already see the appearance to give out a backrooms feeling and progress into what we have now.

A lot has changed since the last version. In the picture above you can see a change in the wall texture, we have tried going for a gray color.

In this version we had also implemented the stress mechanic. Originally, the stress mechanic was supposed to have a status bar in the left-hand corner, but as you'll see in later versions, we have scrapped that and decided it's better to keep it hidden and have the player tell by sound and graphical clues. The distortion you can see around the screen is a part of the stress system, this distortion gets more intense as your stress rises. There are also other special effects which we won't talk about now.

In this version we had worked further on the stress mechanic, the red bar you can see in the stress status bar indicates how low you can go. When the game starts, you can go all the way down and the red bar is not there, but if you, for example, stare at a light for too long, or panic for too long, this red bar will rise. You can not go below this bar and it does not go down, once it's up, it's up.

In this picture you can see the first ever map generation our map generator has created. In this version the stress status bar was hidden. The textures were once again modified to more fit the original creepy-pasta image. The map generator is practically working at this point, but it still has some bugs and needs some finishing touches before complete.

This version was more or less just an aesthetic update. The most noticeable change is the floor texture, it's the same as previous textures, but darker. This is the version in which our first video was recorded.

In response for the feedback we received from the video, we have made the floor texture to be more bright. The lights have also been changed from yellow to white. This version also includes fixed wall side textures (can be noticed on the wall to the left of the image in the middle).

And here we are, the current version. This version has the map generator practically finished and some major bugs fixed. The things that are lacking right now is a sound system and an AI. Once we have that done, we're ready to release a demo version for you all to try out!

We won't give any info about the demo version just yet, but we hope to have it ready very soon. We're excited to release it and see what you all think! Also  along with the demo version, we plan to set up a Patreon page for optional donations and some rewards. Some money gained from Patreon will be saved for the Steam game submission fee as we plan to also make a Steam release in the future and the rest of the money will be used to purchase assets or other things towards the game. We'll keep you updated!
